Our Story

The Boot is a ground-breaking pub – bringing all the best things about the traditional English pub – great food and hospitality, whilst integrating up-to-date technology with innovative features not usually found

The original building dates way back and legend has it that Freston was the site of the last recorded case of the Black Death in England. A couple of minutes from the A12 and A14, a stone’s throw from the River Orwell with views over the iconic bridge, The Boot stands at the gateway to the Shotley Peninsula – ideal as a base camp for ramblers & cyclists. Alton Water & the Royal Hospital School are a couple of minutes down the road.

The 400 year old building has been brought back to a beautiful standard and incorporates classic English touches – antique church pews sit alongside the dart board with featured local artists showcasing their talents on the walls (as well as homemade taxidermy pieces..).

The open kitchen features a woodburning oven and the on-site cold smoker adds an extra element to the mainly home-grown food featured on the two menus. The Boot menu features classic pub style dishes – all homemade and using the best Suffolk produce, the Other menu is designed to increase interest, showcase the home grown produce and make the meal that much more of an experience – we’re aiming to make it a much more sociable way of using a pub. We’ve linked up with several fantastic breweries throughout England and have a unique selection of spirits and fabulous wines to boot.

We have a wedding paddock with space for up to 150 in beautiful tipis – guests can stroll through the large & rambling pub garden (maybe after a session on our petanque pistes) into our massive kitchen garden loaded with heritage English fruit & vegetables. Sit amongst the trees and admire the view out over the River Orwell taking in the duck pond, chickens, snail beds & bee hives in the neighbouring wild flower meadow. Or book a summer function in our greenhouse area.

We also have our outside cooking area with a rocket pizza oven and the use of several Heath Robinson-esque barbecue contraptions to add an extra theatrical element to our cooking as well as providing space for cookery demos and talks.

Check out the schedule for our tiny cinema – 18 art deco seats with cutting edge tech will have several showings per week as well being available for private hire – kids parties, business presentations and televised sporting events. It also comes in handy for giving parents a quiet window for brunch on the weekend or a Sunday roast as well. Check out our screening schedule here.

Bootch! is our home-made kombucha – a super healthy, self-carbonated soda, sweetened with our own honey & with flavours picked from our garden and greenhouses.

We want The Boot to be a return to the values that English pubs are renowned for – a warm & genuine welcome, an experience that you’ll want to return for, fantastic food & drink and a place where you can be yourself – whether it’s a pint, a game of darts and a chat with your mates, a celebratory meal or a special event in the Paddock. We all need time to step away from our usual routine and get some quality time alone or with friends.

Come down for a tour and a chat and see how we’re striving to take the English pub forward.
